Joanne Siegel, Inspiration for Lois Lane, Passes Away at Age 93

Today Cleveland’s Plain Dealer announced that Jerry Siegel’s widow Joanne has passed away at the age of 93. I had the opportunity to meet and talk with her in the summer of 2009 during the re-dedication of the house on Kimberly Ave where Superman was created. You can see video of her speech that day in the video above.

I got to speak with her both the evening before the ceremony and briefly before it started. While she was nervous about speaking about the ongoing legal proceedings concerning the rights to the Man of Steel she had no hesitance when it came to discussing both her love for the character and for her husband.

I’ll treasure the brief time I got to spend with her, and the stories she told me about her husband. Looking into her eyes made you feel like you were actually talking to Lois Lane, the character she was both the physical and spiritual model for. Meeting her and seeing the house where Superman was created has been and will remain one of the most resonant moments in my adult life and I regret that I will never have the chance to enjoy her company again.
