Web Toolbox: The Geocities-izer
Every Tuesday we spotlight one of our favorite web tools. The tools can be funny, productive, useful, or nonsensical. If you would like to suggest a tool please click here.
From the demented minds of wonder tonic comes this funny, fun tool that will send you right back to dial-up! Simply enter any website and The Geocities-izer will convert it into a site that looks like it’s straight from the web’s dawning years. Animated GIFs, fallacious counters, an auto-playing MIDI pop song, and MADE WITH NOTEPAD bragging honors made the web so much better. Let’s bring them back!
Here’s The Geocities-izer applied to The New York Times homepage:

A silly and simple tool, RotateMe simply takes a web site and flips it 90 degrees. While RotateMe is mainly meant as a gag (try hiding the URL RotateMe generates behind a bit.ly link!) it could serve a purpose for people using a wide-screen montor mounted vertically like you see in many businesses to display their web site to customers. Also good for April fools or to mess with a drunken friend.

How many times have you found a great lecture on Youtube and wanted to throw it on your iPod to listen to later? There are many tools out there to pull down the video, but wouldn’t you like just the audio so you can listen to it while you are out and about?
Dirpy is a simple tool to take Youtube videos and convert them into MP3s. It allows you to select how much of the video you want to convert, and also gives you the option to download high-quality versions of the video itself. There’s even a bookmarklet you can add to you browser’s menu bar to initiate the process directly from Youtube instead of copying and pasting the URL.

Before you go to pay sites like iStockPhoto to find resources for your project that you don’t have the skill, time, or money to produce yourself (I’m talking stock footage and images, not templates) check to see if there are some Creative Commons resources you can use for free. Creative Commons Search is an easy tool to search sites like Google, Flickr, Jamendo (music), blip.tv (video), and many others for rich stock content. Always make sure to check the license, but generally things can be used for free, or as long as you give credit for it. You can search specifically for content licensed for commercial use too.
